Late payers forfeit any return privileges.

9. In some cases we may have duplicate lots of identical description and these may be substituted to under bidders.
10. Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express are accepted for payment. However an additional 3% is charged for use of said card in auctions and mailbid sales. Please note if you use a credit card and are a new customer, we must be able to confirm your billing address. For those of you overseas this may be difficult so we ask that you include a numismatic reference.
11. Digital photos, scans, black & white or color copies are available for most single lots in the sale. Photos, scans and black and white print copies are $1 per item, while color copies are $2 per side. Payable in advance, please. In most cases digital images sent via email are free. Please do not wait until the last week to ask us for these.
12. All lots with 6 or more items are sold as is and are not returnable.
13. Invoices are due and payable upon receipt unless arrangements are made prior to the closing of the sale. Late payers forfeit any rights of return. All invoices over 30 days overdue are subject to an interest charge of 1 1/2% per month.

17. Estimates are just that, estimates. Lots may, and do, sell for above and below estimate. Please bid what the lot is worth to you. High bids will be reduced to 5 to 10% over the 2nd high bid when possible.
18. Bidders are responsible for errors in bidding, so please check your bid sheet carefully.
19. There are no buyer's fees in our sales.
20. All overseas packages will be shipped via registered or express mail at buyer's risk. Shipments of books will be very expensive to overseas addresses.
21. Bidders not known to us must provide us with satisfactory credit references or pay a 25% deposit.
22. Prices realized will be published after the sale and will be mailed to all consignors, subscribers and competitive bidders. Others may receive a copy for $5 or check our website.
23. Slabbed (encapsulated) coins graded and certified by PCGS, NGC, ICG or ANACS may not be returned for grading reasons.
24. The minimum acceptable bid on any lot is at least 60% of the estimate. In some cases a reserve may be higher than that, but it will never be higher than the estimate. We have made every effort to make the estimates realistic and conservative. In addition, no bids on coins and medals of precious metal lots will be accepted that are below the melt value of the item. For our auction purposes we are defining precious metals as being silver, gold, platinum or palladium. The price of gold as we write this is almost $1600 per troy ounce and silver is almost $30 per troy ounce. As you may be well aware, the markets are in a state of turmoil and these prices will probably be different when you read this and different again when the sale closes.
If viewing the catalog online is sufficient for you, please let us know so that we can cut down on the number of catalogs that we have printed and mailed out. If you are an active, competitive bidder and wish to continue to receive printed catalogs, we, of course, are more than happy to continue sending them to you. But please note we will be reducing our mailing list significantly before our next auction.
IN MEMORIAM CARL ROSENBLUM (back to top)
JULY 30, 1915 - DECEMBER 6, 2011
The publication of this catalog has been delayed approximately two months from our original target date due to family matters. Quite a number of you knew my Dad either personally or through his business W. P. Andrews Co. which started out as a chemical consulting company but later specialized in Israeli coins for the better part of 20 years. He was a fixture at coin shows in the New York and New Jersey area for much of the 1970s and 1980s and provided a friendly and non-threatening face in those hectic days. He was life member #6 of the American-Israel Numismatic Association and helped start and support many of the Israel Numismatic Society clubs in New Jersey and New York. His previous career was as a chemical engineer and during World War II his talents were used to make bombs and ammunition for our troops. Many of his inventions were indeed inventions for which he applied for and received patents. Unfortunately his love and skill for chemistry and science did not extend to me and I am not able to explain them.
I would not have spent the past 40 years in this business without the help, support, encouragement, advice and love of my Dad. Besides the most obvious, that of being my father, Dad was responsible for me entering this profession. He helped a bit financially, but more importantly he opened some doors and guided my way when I needed some guidance, even if I didn't know I needed it. While we were never in business together, we were very friendly semi-competitors who occasionally worked together on projects. When I was offered my first opportunity to make a purchase of a major rarity in the mid 1970s, he was the one who told me to go for it even though I wondered whether somebody else would be crazy enough to give me a profit on this. (Now I wish I had kept the banknote because it's probably worth 40 times or more what I paid for it in 1974).
Besides numismatics and chemistry and gadgets, my Dad had a love for chess, family, friends and ice cream. Until a few years ago, he and another elderly person volunteered to teach chess at a number of schools near where he lived in Connecticut. His bumper sticker read "Push Pawns, Not Drugs" and he continued to play chess until the last week of his life. The day before he died, while he was in the hospital, he told me he was bored because there was nobody to play chess with. He loved to finish off every dinner with ice cream and, if my Mom would have let him, breakfast and lunch as well. And he was always there for his family no matter what. Even in his last months he would ask if there was something he could do for me even though all I really wanted was for him to stop driving, which is something he finally did, but not willingly, a few months before his passing.
BIDDING IN OUR MAILBID SALE (back to top)
We will stop taking bids after 9:00 pm Mountain time on February 6th, 2012, as soon as our phone and/or fax stops ringing for 10 minutes. Please do not wait until the last minute and get shut out. In every sale, a number of bidders cannot get through on the last night. No matter when you call, you cannot be guaranteed to be the last bidder because the sale will extend for at least 10 minutes after your call. But once it is over we will not answer the phone. If time is running late and the phone is busy, I strongly suggest sending us an email or a fax with your bid or bids.
We suggest you bid above estimate if you want an item as high bids will be reduced. Our bid sheets offer several bidding options that can save you money, optimize your bids and see that you get the lots that you really want. If you are unsure of how to use these options, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to explain them to you.
Please keep in mind that in some cases there may be unpublished reserves set either by the consignor or the cataloger and no bids of less than 60% of estimate are considered. In some cases the reserve is higher than 60% of estimate but in no cases is it more than the estimate. We do not have a call back service, but after placing your bids you may contact us to check on your bids. And we take seriously the commitment to reduce bids. We do not reveal the high bid of any lot, but if you have placed a bid on a lot, you may contact us after your bid has been placed and we will tell you if you are the high bidder.
Usually well over 1/3 of all successful bids are reduced and over 75% of successful bidders have at least one of their winning bids reduced. We believe that the best strategy to being a successful bidder is placing your bids early and not waiting until the last minute. And because we reduce the high bid to no more than 10% over the 2nd high bid whenever possible, we think it makes sense to send in your bids early with the confidence that your bid will be reduced if at all possible. It's a successful auction when everybody is satisfied with the results: the consignors, the bidders and the auctioneer.
NO BUYER'S FEE (back to top)
There has been quite a bit of discussion lately about companies that charge what some say are excessive buyer's fees. We do not charge any buyer's fees in our sales. You are charged only for the amount of your winning bid plus a postage and shipping charge. If you want the convenience of using your credit card or sending us a bank wire, we do charge you a small fee to help cover our costs.
LOT VIEWING SCHEDULE (back to top)
golden coin show, Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 West 6th Avenue, Indiana St. Exit of 6th Avenue Parkway. Saturday January 21, 9 am to 4 pm.
Aurora coin show, Red Lion Inn. I-225 & Parker Road. Saturday January 28th. Same times as above.
We will have most lots in the sale available for viewing at our bourse tables during the shows. However, we will not be bringing bulky, heavy or cumbersome lots. If there is something you would like us to bring, please let us know and we will make every effort to bring it. We may be able to arrange individual private showings, at locations of our choosing, at other times.
We plan to have the majority of the material in the sale in our office, Monday through Friday from January 10th until the close of the sale, if you need a more detailed description of any of the lots. However, please contact us as well in advance of the close of the sale as possible in order that we can provide you with as much information as we can. We will be happy to return your call if we cannot provide you with the information you require when you call, fax or email.
We will confirm all email bids received within 24 hours of receiving the bid. If you do not receive a confirmation please contact us. Please mark your email as bids, auctions or something similar so that our filter will recognize it. We do not confirm mail or fax bids unless specifically asked to do so. Please write clearly on your bid sheet. If possible, in addition to the lot # and your maximum bid, a small description is most helpful.
No information will be available about the results of the sale until all bids have been checked and invoices written. This should take 3 or 4 days. We will not be answering the phone until that information is ready. We hope to have the phones open by Friday Feburary 10th.
HIGHLIGHTS OF AUCTION 40J (back to top)
There is no gold section in the auction but we have a few gold coins and medals interspersed in the sale. Please check out lots 131A, 175A, 222A, 267, 411A, 432A, 724 and 735.
Although our ancient coin section is much smaller than usual, it is not without a number of rare and interesting items. 4 coins of Herod Antipas are being offered and while none are mint-state, a few are comparatively nice and they are all scarce.
A very choice year one half-shekel of the Jewish War (First Revolt) is the highlight of the ancients. This should be of interest to more than a few people. This is followed by a year two shekel which, while not high grade, is genuine and will offer someone an opportunity to own a rarity at a reasonable price. Other Judaean coins include a year one Bar Kochba middle bronze, a silver zuz and city coins of Abila, Antipatris and Marisa.
Other ancients that should be mentioned include two nice Shekels from Tyre, a tetradrachm of Gotzares II, a continuation of Roman women on coins, including a small bronze of Domitia, and an As of Orbiana, as well as a variety of other interesting coins.
We have a small but interesting offering of literature including major works on coins of Judaea, Abdera and Kamarina. In addition, the highlight of this section is no doubt a 1791 4-volume edition of the complete works of Josephus, the celebrated 1st century Roman-Jewish historian.
There are almost 360 lots of world coins, medals and tokens that should offer most every collector or dealer an opportunity to add to their collection or inventory. As usual we have a solid listing of Palestine and Israeli coins including a rare token of Mikveh Israel, numerous Israeli commemoratives and many high grade Palestine coins. Perhaps the single rarest coin is a mint-state 1955 20 Franc Belgium coin with French legends, but there are many other interesting items including countermarked coins of the world (including some on US coins), scarce coins from Switzerland, France, Italy and New Zealand and many medals and tokens from around the globe. We even have a handful of US coins including an 1877 20¢ piece and an 1889-CC Morgan dollar.
Our world paper money section is also smaller than usual but we still offer a number of rare and/or interesting lots. 4 sketches of proposed notes for the Israel 1958-60 series of notes are being offered. Each sketch is from the Shamir Brothers firm whose designs were used to produce the notes. 3 decent Palestine Currency Board notes are being offered, one of which we sold to a collector in 1974 and purchased from him this past summer for many times what he paid for the note. A meal card from the Stara Gradiska Concentration Camp in Croatia as well as other concentration camp notes and related items are for sale, including one fascinating item from Buchenwald with the impressions of the camp written on the back of the note from one of the US soldiers who helped liberate the inmates in 1945.
One of the more interesting items in this section is one of the first US Postal Savings Stamps issued in 1941, which was sent to a newspaper reporter in NY in the hope that he would not only help by buying stamps but also by publicizing the effort. The appeal was personally signed by Treasury Secretary Henry Morganthau.
There are over 200 lots in our Medallic Judaica section containing a variety of medals, tokens and related exonumia. Many of these we haven't offered in years, others we have never offered. Collectors of this material should also look in Part One of the auction for Jewish-related medals and tokens as well. A great many of these items come from a collection that we have helped disperse over the past few years. Every time we receive a package in the mail from this gentlemen, we open the boxes with great anticipation. In addition, another group came from a serious collector of medals relating to the Holocaust.
Our Judaic and Holy Land paper section, as well as our Holocaust section, is also smaller than usual, but we urge collectors to spend some time looking at this section. Arthur Szyk works, Eretz-Israel bonds and shares, anti-Semitic notgeld and some interesting documents are listed. And many items which could have been listed in these sections are being in offered in other sections of the catalog.

"broad" 1. vf+, a few minor nicks. mikweh israel around "1"/aiu. one of the nicest of these rare tokens we've handled in many years. these tokens were issued by charles netter on behalf of the alliance israelite universalle and are similar to the tokens issued by the zichron yakov wine colony founded in 1879. neither series of tokens spelled out the denomination probably to avoid upsetting local ottoman officials. however within a few years the turks decided that even these tokens without the denomination smelled of trouble and they were recalled rather quickly. that was not the case for the token listed in the next lot! $400+?

*735 complete city coin-medal "presentation" set" including gold medal in green album. as above but with addition of the jerusalem gold medal. ccm 1-9b. this is the only album (official or otherwise) that we have ever seen that was issued specifically for the complete 19 piece set. no doubt rare. medals and album are in as issued condition. we searched high and low in all reference books and journals published about israeli coins and medals and could find no mention anywhere for this unlisted set. we have come to the conclusion that this must be a very limited edition special presentation set given to a very few important people in the 1960s. and our consignor was among the most important and influential numismatists in israel at that time. this set has almost 13 ounces of actual silver and .8550 ounces of actual gold and the set is of the utmost rarity. $2000+

*738 ant-2. aina tour medal, jerusalem city coin. 1970 bronze (15.04g) 35mm. thin flan. scarce, only 100 pieces minted. haffner lists the weight as 27 grams which is entirely inaccurate. igcmc lists the bronze at 20g and the copper at 23g. since we started tracking weights in the late 1990's, this is lightest specimen we've had. $60+
*739 ant-2. aina tour medal, jerusalem city coin. 1970 copper (20.54g) 35mm. thick flan. scarce, only 100 pieces minted. see the lot above. this is a copper striking and is redder, heavier, thicker and slightly wider than above. slightly toned. $60+
*740 ant-3. aina tour medal, valour. 1971, tombac 35mm (24.63g). 100 pieces were struck for aina's 3rd tour. sylvia haffner listed the weight at 27 grams, the igcmc listed the weight at 27-33 grams. however in looking back at our records, we have found that the medals are in the 24 grams ± range or the 33 grams ± range. i can't recall any that are in the 27± range. in box of issue, with specially inscribed inner cover. a couple of minor nicks. $60+?
*741 ant-4. aina tour medal, jerusalem-knesset. 1972, tombac 35mm. 100 pieces were struck for aina's 4th tour. 22.56 grams. edge #092. haffner lists weight as 27 grams, igcmc lists it at 23 grams. $60

*743 ant-8. aina tour medal, aina token. 1976, brass 30mm. as issued. 11.29 grams which is close to the igcmc reported weight of 11 grams. sylvia haffner was erroneous in her listed weight of 25 grams. 100 pieces were struck for aina's 8th tour per igcmc. haffner is probably also wrong in her listing of 150 pieces. $60
*744 pm-5. dentistry school. 1964, bronze 38mm. struck for the dedication of the school. unc, but some light handling marks on reverse. please note that haffner-magnus wrongly lists this medal as 33mm (it is 38mm) and that the correct weight is 20.85 (or so) grams rather than 30 grams. scarce. $90

Why do people collect this "stuff"? I'm asked that question repeatedly. And while there is no "correct" answer, most people seem to collect these items as teaching tools for use at home, in schools, synagogues and churches. Many people donate them to national or local museums. There are people who still deny the existence or the magnitude of the Holocaust. These items are a weapon against them.
