Late payers forfeit any return privileges.

9. In some cases we may have duplicate lots of identical description and these may be substituted to under bidders.
10. Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express are accepted for payment. However an additional 3% is charged for use of said card in auctions and mailbid sales. Please note if you use a credit card and are a new customer, we must be able to confirm your billing address. For those of you overseas this may be difficult so we ask that you include a numismatic reference.
11. Digital photos, scans, black & white or color copies are available for most single lots in the sale. Photos, scans and black and white print copies are $1 per item, while color copies are $2 per side. Payable in advance, please. In most cases digital images sent via email are free. Please do not wait until the last week to ask us for these.
12. All lots with 6 or more items are sold as is and are not returnable.

14. There is a $25 charge for bad checks.
15. In case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will win the lot.
16. Phone, fax, mail and email bids are accepted; phone bids should be confirmed in writing. All email bids will be confirmed by a return email, otherwise no confirmation will be sent unless you ask us to.
17. Estimates are just that, estimates. Lots may and do, sell for above and below estimate. Please bid what the lot is worth to you. High bids will be reduced to 5 to 10% over the 2nd high bid when possible.
18. Bidders are responsible for errors in bidding, so please check your bid sheet carefully.
19. There are no buyer's fees in our sales.
20. All overseas packages will be shipped via registered or express mail at buyer's risk. Shipments of books and some of the Odd & Curious money will be very expensive to overseas addresses.
21. Bidders not known to us must provide us with satisfactory credit references or pay a 25% deposit.
22. Prices realized will be published after the sale and will be mailed to all consignors, subscribers and competitive bidders. Others may receive a copy for $5 or check our website.
23. Slabbed (Encapsulated) coins graded and certified by PCGS, NGC, ICG or ANACS may not be returned for grading reasons.
24. The minimum acceptable bid on any lot is at least 60% of the estimate. In some cases a reserve may be higher than that, but it will never be higher than the estimate. We have made every effort to make the estimates realistic and conservative. In addition, no bids on coins and medals of precious metal lots will be accepted that are below the melt value of the item. For our auction purposes we are defining precious metals as being silver, gold, platinum or palladium. The price of gold as we write this is $1500 per troy ounce and silver is more than $35 per troy ounce. As you may be well aware, the markets are in a state of turmoil and these prices will probably be different when you read this and different again when the sale closes.
If viewing the catalog online is sufficient for you, please let us know so that we can cut down on the number of catalogs that we have printed and mailed out. If you are an active, competitive bidder and wish to continue to receive printed catalogs, we, of course, are more than happy to continue sending them to you. But please note we will be reducing our mailing list significantly before our next auction.
BIDDING IN OUR AUCTIONS (back to top)
We will stop taking bids after 9:00 pm Mountain time on June 13th, 2011 as soon as our phone and/or fax stops ringing for 10 minutes. Please do not wait until the last minute and get shut out. In every sale, a number of bidders can not get through on the last night. No matter when you call, you can not be guaranteed to be the last bidder because the sale will extend for at least 10 minutes after your call. But once it is over we will not answer the phone. If time is running late and the phone is busy, I strongly suggest sending us an email or a fax with your bid or bids.
We suggest you bid above estimate if you want an item as high bids will be reduced. Our bid sheets offer several bidding options that can save you money, optimize your bids and see that you get the lots that you really want. If you are unsure of how to use these options, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to explain them to you.
Please keep in mind that in some cases there may be unpublished reserves set either by the consignor or the cataloger and no bids of less than 60% of estimate are considered. In some cases the reserve is higher than 60% of estimate but in no cases is it more than the estimate. We do not have a call back service, but after placing your bids you may contact us to check on your bids. And we take seriously the commitment to reduce bids. We do not reveal the high bid of any lot, but if you have placed a bid on a lot, you may contact us after your bid has been placed and we will tell you if you are the high bidder.
Usually well over 1/3 of all successful bids are reduced and over 75% of successful bidders have at least one of their winning bids reduced. We believe that the best strategy to being a successful bidder is placing your bids early and not waiting until the last minute. And because we reduce the high bid to no more than 10% over the 2nd high bid whenever possible, we think it makes sense to send in your bid early with the confidence that your bid will be reduced if at all possible. It's a successful auction when everybody is satisfied with the results; the consignors, the bidders and the auctioneer.
NO BUYER'S FEES (back to top)
There has been quite a bit of discussion lately about companies that charge what some say are excessive buyer's fees. We do not charge any buyer's fees in our sales. You are charged only for the amount of your winning bid plus postage and shipping charges. If you want the convenience of using your credit card or sending us a bank wire, we do charge you a small fee to help cover our costs.
LOT VIEWING SCHEDULE (back to top)
Aurora COIN SHOW Red Lion Inn. 3200 South Parker Rd. I-225 and Parker Road. Saturday June 4, 9 am to 4 pm. We will have most lots in the sale available for viewing at our bourse table during the show. However we will not be bringing bulky, heavy or cumbersome lots. If there is something you would like us to bring, please let us know and we will make every effort to bring it. We may bring some material with us to the Friday June 3rd DAWN meeting.
We plan to have the majority of the material in the sale in our office Monday through Friday until the close of the sale if you need more detailed description of any of the lots. However, please contact us as well in advance of the close of the sale as possible in order that we can provide you with as much information as we can. We will be happy to return your call if we cannot provide you with the information you require when you call, fax or email. We may be out of town May 29th through June 2nd.
We will confirm all email bids received within 24 hours of receiving the bid. If you do not receive a confirmation please contact us. We have been deluged by spam as I'm sure many of you have also, thus we ask that when sending us a bid or inquiring about the sale, please put "Bids" or "Mailbid Sale" or "Auction" in the subject line so we do not delete your email along with the junk we receive every day. We do not confirm mail or fax bids unless specifically asked to do so. Please write clearly on your bid sheet. If possible, in addition to the lot # and your maximum bid a small description is most helpful.
No information will be available about the results of the sale until all bids have been checked and invoices written. This should take 3 or 4 days. We will not be answering the phone until that information is ready. We hope to have the phones open by Friday June 17th.
HIGHLIGHTS OF AUCTION 41E (back to top)
We usually have a gold coin section in our auctions but we have so few gold coins to offer that the few gold coins are interspersed with the regular coins. The gold coins and medals are 152-153, 195, 248, 268-271, 348-349, 368, 421, 503 and 653.
Our auction starts off with 18 lots of Odd & Curious Money consisting mainly of African items from the collection and inventory of the late Mark Bir of Tucson, Arizona. Mark, who passed away in May of 2009, was a coin dealer who specialized in Latin American material among other world coins. He also shared our love of Odd and Curious Money, especially from Africa. Odd and Curious Money is also known by various other names including Traditional Money, Primitive Money, Ethnographic Money and that "strange" stuff.
We follow that with a selection of books from the David H. Donald library. Included in this offering are almost complete runs of the Krause-Mishler Standard Catalog of World Coins and Richard Yeoman's Modern Coins of the World, more commonly known as the Brown. Among other authors represented are John Davenport, Frank Draskovic, Stuart Rubenfeld, William Craig, Gunther Kienast (both volumes of his Karl Goetz Opus), Frank Robinson, Bill Spengler, Wayne Sayles and David Vice.
As usual our Ancient Jewish coinage section is the highlight of our ancient offerings. We begin with a number of small silver coins including rare Yehud coins. Other Judaean coins of interest include a high grade Antipas coin (or at least one side is high grade), two rare coins of Agrippa I, a rare Agrippa II pre-royal coin with a portrait of Claudius, a Year Two Shekel of the Jewish War and a Bar Kochba Revolt Middle bronze overstruck on a coin of Ascalon with part of Trajan's head visible. This section concludes with numerous high grade and/or rare city coins.
Our other ancient coin sections are smaller than usual but contain a number of better and/or interesting coins. Among those is a very high grade "Jerusalem" type Shekel of Tyre, a high grade 1/2 Shekel of Tyre and a late and rare date Shekel which was first published in the late 1990s and is only the 2nd that we are aware of. An offering of Roman women on coins is highlighted by a Sestertius of Orbiana and the ancients conclude with a gold Solidus of Heraclius and an Arab-Byzantine coin of Jerusalem.
Our world coin section is large and diverse leading off with 25 Chop-marked crowns of the world from the David Donald collection. Chop-marks are indentations made in coins to attest to their weight, silver content and/or their legality. These were usually done by private merchants and once chopped they would circulate freely. David was a dedicated collector of these and somewhere in the collection there should be some correspondence he had with other chop-mark collectors including, the Chop Mark Collectors Club (?) which I believe was the brain-child of a Frank Rose. Some collectors love chop-marked coins, the more the merrier, other collectors would rather have a coin with only a handful of clear and distinct chops and still others don't like them at all.
Continuing on in the world coin section, we run across a number of scarce Australian (and later New Zealand) merchant tokens from the middle of the 19th century, the popular 1900 400th Anniversary of the Discovery of Brazil 4-piece silver set, the elusive 1973 Prince Edward Island centennial commemorative medal set and a Central American Republic Crown. Next comes China where we are offering silver crowns, a large cast coin, gold coins from the People's Republic as well as 10 silver "Fantasies". None of these Chinese coins are of recent manufacture, all have been in this country for many years.
Other lots of more than passing interest are two Karl Goetz medals, a long run of Westphalian notgeld including the very scarce large size Billion Mark piece, numerous better coins from Greece and Greenland, Guatemalan 5 &10 Quetzales gold coins and perhaps the strongest offering of privately made Israel mint and presentation sets ever. Certainly the strongest we've offered in our 40 years in business! Also up for sale are numerous Italian coins including a nice run of medieval coins (including a rare coin of Gaeta) as well a few better crowns, a type set of Wilhelmina of the Netherlands gold coins, Palestine coins and tokens, 16th to 18th century Polish coins, Russian, Swiss and Tibetan coins.
In our 80+ lots of world paper you will run across a group of 5 Konversionkasse notes with consecutive serial numbers, a number of Konversionkasse bonds, a rare 1955 Bank of Israel Specimen Set and an equally rare lot of "Progressive Proofs" of the 1958 10 Lirot. Also of note in the Israel paper section are numerous lots of consecutively numbered notes from the 1955 and especially the 1958 series as well as two error notes. Other highlights in this section include a few rare Nicaraguan notes, 4 Palestine Currency Board issues and a United States, Continental Currency 8 dollar note.
Our Judaic and Holy Land section contains a little over 200 lots of diverse and interesting material. Among the highlights are numerous Biblically related European Jetons from the 16th and 17th centuries, a run of better False or Gorlitz Shekels some of which are unlisted. Other pieces include a rare mid-19th century European token from Matzeldorf, medals of the chief Rabbis of Belgium, Copenhagen and Budapest, a heretofore unknown (at least to this cataloger) circa 1900 Charity token, a rare 1933 plaque in the form of a Jewish Star of Theodore Herzl, a handful of Jewish related South-American items and other assorted medals and tokens including some honoring such diverse personalities as Elie Wiesel, George Burns and Jacques Schulman.
The section of medals devoted to the issues of the state of Israel include a pattern or two, a few better silver medals including the rare 12 Tribes of Israel set by Salvador Dali and others either singularly or in a group. In addition there are a number of rare "Commissioned" medals including a plain edge B'nai B'rith piece, 2 Pablo Casals medals in different metals, two rare Shavit Till medals, one of which we can not recall seeing, a rare Israel Bonds medals presented by Yiizhak Rabin during his 1st stint as Prime Minister, an extremely rare Yad Vashem medal as well as a Prime Minister's medal from Golda Meir in French!
Our miscellaneous paper section is unfortunately small as our deadline arrived too quickly. However there are a number of interesting certificates, tokens and other documents. Of particular note is a tri-lingual illustrated 1957 book titled The History of the Israel Armed Forces in Hebrew, English and French.
The Holocaust Memorabilia contains a small group of notgeld consisting mainly of notes we've never offered or rare pieces. Also offered is a work card and other documents from the Buczacz Ghetto, a town in Galicia which has been variously a part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire, Poland, Russia and Nazi Germany. And all that in the 20th century. It is located in what is now the Ukraine Republic. We've never had an item from there. Also in this section are Nazi-issued passports from the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother of noted numismatist Frank Robinson, and the sale closes with two books published in Poland just after the completion of the war, one with first-hand accounts of the atrocities of the Holocaust, the other documenting the paperwork of the Nazis.

THE HOLOCAUST AND ANTI-SEMITISM (back to top)
There are a number of lots in other sections of this catalog that could just as easily been listed in this section. Among those lots are: 356, 457-460, 509-510, 512-518, 569, 578, 584, 630, 634-635, 673, 675-676, 684 and 754.
Why do people collect this stuff? Obviously people collect for different reasons, but most people seem to collect these items as teaching tools for use at home, in schools, synagogues and churches. Many people donate them to national or local museums. There are people who deny the existence or magnitude of the Holocaust. These items are a weapon against them.

*785 buczacz (buchach) ghetto work card. 1941. buczacz, spelled in various ways, including buchach, was a town south of lwow in galicia, and part of the austria-hungarian empire in the early part of the 20th century, before the poles, the russians and the nazis took their turns. it is now known as buchach in present day ukraine. it was the birthplace of the famed nobel prize winning author s. y. agnon (see lots 746 & 785). this is the first item that i can recall from the buczacz ghetto.
A Melkekarte f`9Fr Juden (literally a registration card) for Wolf Rinder. c. 16 x 7 1/4" pink cardboard, folded to make it c. 7.5 x 4". The card was issued to Rinder, who was born in January of 1913, in 1941 by the Tarnopol Labor Office/Buczacz Branch. Printed in German, Polish and Russian by the Warsaw State Printer. It features his personal details, his photo and a Nazi hand-stamp on the front and the signature of the commanding officer under a 9-line paragraph giving the guidelines for Jewish employment. The holders of such cards (known as Shein) were considered "lucky" because the work at a Nazi plant was better than the alternative, usually a trip to the Death Camps. The inner pages of the card reveal Rinder's working history. From September 1941 until October of 1942 he worked for the city of Monasterzyska, about 15 km away, as an "unreplaceable assistant". On November 1st 1942 he began work in Buczacz as a "Sanitary"? That may have been something like a garbage man. Two of the inner pages have 7-paragraph instructions and regulations for the cardholders in Polish, Russian and German which Rinder signed.
The Buczacz Ghetto was founded in late 1942 without walls but with numerous restrictions on where Jews could and could not walk. There was also a J`9Fdenlager (or closed camp) nearby. Thousands of Jews were murdered in 5 Aktions between 1941 and 1943. Two additional documents shed more light on the suffering and misery Rinder went through. One is a pass issued in April of 1943 which allowed Rinder to be outside the J`9Fdenlager until 19:30 hours. The other is an officially signed and hand-stamped Passierschein (travel pass) dated 31 May 1943 allowing him and his belongings to travel to Kopichintza. In July 1943 Buczacz was declared "Judenrein". Just a few hundred survived, Rinder among them. 3 items, the card in decent but aged condition, the two other items on very thin paper and well used. Extremely rare. A story of one man's survival. For more information about Buczacz see http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/buchach/buchach.html# $1000+
*786 documents: crimes and martyrdom. 1945. 214 page cardcover book in polish with first hand accounts of the atrocities of the holocaust from (presumably) survivors. cover depicts a drawing of two huddled figures covering their faces and weeping. no doubt one of the earliest accounts of what went on in europe during the 1st half of the 1940s. $40+?
