African Odd & Curious Money, Ancient and World Coins

WEB LIST 41B FEBRUARY 2011

Download PDF version of this list.

About a week or so late but finally our February weblist is ready. This list contains many new purchases plus old friends at reduced prices, except for some gold and silver items which reflect today's melt prices. Please note that credit cards can NOT be used for gold purchases unless one is willing to pay an additional 5% service fee. Your check or money order, of course, is gladly accepted. Lots of images accompany this list. If there is something else you would like to see, were happy to try to send you email images of items listing for $25 or more.

We have finally begun to list items from Mark Bir's collection and inventory of African Odd and Curious Money are art objects. They are in particular order and we'll pull some more stuff out of the storage area when the temperatures moderate a bit. Some will be on our next weblist, some will be offered in our next auction.

This list should have at least something for everybody. After Mark's collection we offer just the start of a large Judaean collection (or two) which we acquired in New York. Numerous rare and interesting coins are listed including a Jewish War Shekel, a Bar Kochba Revolt Zuz and a rare Judaea Capta coin overstruck over a coin of Agrippa II. Also a number of rare city-coins are being offered.

The remainder of the ancient coins consists mainly of an interesting collection of mostly lower priced coins formed 30 or so years ago by a collector with a limited budget. He had not rare coins (or at least none that we saw) but he had numerous hard to find and interesting coins. In addition this section lists a few rarities 2 high grade coins of Tyre, one very rare date Shekel of Tyre, a rare silver Hemidrachm of Antichous IX struck in Sebaste and two rare coins struck in Jerusalem in the 7th century AD. One of these is a Byzantine Bronze Follis of Heraclius a coin which we've never offered before, the other is a very nice Arab-Byzantine Fals.

The world section contains many items from the David Donald collection of world coins which numerous elusive, but not necessarily expensive, items. Also being offered is a vary rare Crusader Christian imitative dirhem of Acre which depicts a cross in the center of the coins and an explicit Christian legend in Arabic!

Once this list is out we will begin working on our 2011 Israel/Palestine Stock List and another weblist for March. Once that is done we will begin working our spring auction which will contain many exciting items including the David Donald collection of chop-marked coins of the world and numerous other goodies.

AFRICAN ART OBJECTS AND ODD AND CURIOUS MONEY

This is just the beginning of a huge offering of African Money and Art as collected and offered by the late Mark Bir. Please note that all sizes are approximate and that shipping is additional and can be considerable as many of these items are heavy, bulky or fragile and some are all three. Colorado residents without a resale permit will be required to pay sales tax for all items in this section.
