Late payers forfeit any return privileges.
4. All materials are guaranteed genuine, unless noted otherwise.
5. Bid sheets must be signed.
6. We reserve the right to reject any bid.
7. Title does not pass until lots are paid for in full.
8. Postage, insurance & handling are extra. A minimum of $5 per shipment will be charged.
9. In some cases we may have duplicate lots of identical description and these may be substituted to under bidders.
10. Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express are accepted for payment. However an additional 3% is charged for use of said card in auctions and mailbid sales. Please note that we must be able to confirm your billing address if you use a credit card. For those of you overseas this may be difficult so we ask that you include a numismatic reference.
11. Digital photos, scans, black & white or color copies are available for most single lots in the sale. Photos, scans and black and white copies are $1 per item, while color copies are $2 per side. Payable in advance, please. In most cases digital images sent via email are free. Please do not wait until the last week to ask us for these.
12. All lots with 6 or more items are sold as is and are not returnable.
13. Invoices are due and payable upon receipt of invoices, unless arrangements are made prior to the closing of the sale. Late payers forfeit any rights of return. All invoices over 30 days overdue are subject to an interest charge of 1 1/2% per month.
14. There is a $25 charge for bad checks.
15. In case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will win the lot.
16. Phone, fax, mail and email bids are accepted, however phone bids, should be confirmed in writing. All email bids will be confirmed by a return email, otherwise no confirmation will be sent unless you ask us to.
17. Estimates are just that, estimates. Lots may and do, sell for above and below estimate. Please bid what the lot is worth to you. High bids will be reduced to 5 to 10% over the 2nd high bid when possible.
18. Bidders are responsible for errors in bidding, please check your bid sheet carefully.
19. There are no buyer's fees in our sales.
20. All overseas packages will be shipped via registered or express mail at buyer's risk.
21. Bidders not known to us must provide us with satisfactory credit references or pay a 25% deposit.
22. Prices realized will be published after the sale and will be mailed to all consignors, subscribers and competitive bidders. Others may receive a copy for $5.
23. Slabbed (Encapsulated) coins graded and certified by PCGS, NGC, ICG or ANACS may not be returned for grading reasons.
24. The minimum acceptable bid on any lot is at least 60% of the estimate. In some cases a reserve may be higher than that, but it will never be higher than the estimate. We have made every effort to make the estimates realistic and conservative. In addition no bids on coins and medals of precious metal lots will be accepted that are below the melt value of the item. For our auction purposes we are defining precious metals as being of silver, gold, platinum or palladium. The price of gold as we write this is almost $1000 per troy ounce and silver is more than $16 per troy ounce. As you are well aware the markets are in a state of turmoil and these prices will probably be different when you read this and then again different when the sale closes.
If viewing the catalog online is sufficient for you, please let us know so that we can cut down on the number of catalogs that we have printed and mailed out. If you are an active competitive bidder and wish to continue to receive printed catalogs we, of course, are more than happy to continue sending them to you.
IN REMEMBRANCE (back to top)
Recently our old and dear friend David H. Donald passed away unexpectedly. David has been a friend since the 1970's and besides being a personal friend and attending many of our family functions, during many of those years he has helped us with our catalogs, either by proof-reading or being part of our mail crew, usually both. I'm sure there are more spelling and grammar errors than usual because he was not part of this catalog. And we'll miss him again when we mail this catalog in a few weeks. He was a fixture behind my table at local Denver shows for 30 years helping us set up, shut down, show coins and, perhaps most importantly, mix a potent martini.
Some might call him eccentric and he was. but more correctly he was in own person in his own good way. "DD" was perhaps one of the few graduates of MIT who didn't own a computer. He had earned a National Merit Society scholarship to that famous institution but since his parents could afford the tuition, his father was a MD and his mother a descendent of the Brown family (from Brown University!), he gave his scholarship to someone who needed it more. I'm not sure his parents were exactly pleased with that decision. His degree from MIT was not in engineering as one might expect, but in film. And I think that he had even tried his hand in making some films many years ago. After that watching films sufficed and he may have watched every one ever made, many more than once, and kept copious notes about them all. He subscribed to 3 local newspapers, not necessarily to read them, although he did cover to cover (and said they were mostly the same) but to do the crossword puzzles in them all. He was upset, as were many of us, when the Rocky Mountain News shut it's presses this past spring. I could go on and on but suffice it to say that Rita and I will miss him greatly. And you can be sure the mail crew will have a martini for "DD" as soon as this catalog goes to the Post Office.
BIDDING IN OUR MAILBID SALE (back to top)
We will stop taking bids after 9:00 PM Mountain time on November 12th, 2009 as soon as our phone and/or Fax stops ringing for 10 minutes. Please do not wait until the last minute and get shut out. In every sale a number of bidders can not get through on the last night. No matter when you call, you cannot be guaranteed to be the last bidder because the sale will extend for at least 10 minutes after your call. But once it is over we will not answer the phone. If time is running late and the phone is busy, I strongly suggest sending us an email or a fax with your bid or bids.
We suggest you bid above estimate if you want an item as high bids will be reduced. Our bid sheets offer several bidding options that can save you money, optimize your bids and see that you get the lots that you really want. If you are unsure of how to use these options, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to explain them to you.
Please keep in mind that in some cases there may be unpublished reserves set either by the consignor or the cataloger and no bids of less than 60% of estimate are considered. We do not have a call back service, but after placing your bid you may contact us as many times as you like to check on your bids. And we take seriously the commitment to reduce bids. We do not reveal the high bid of any lot, but if you have placed a bid on a lot, you may contact us after your bid has been placed and we will tell you if you are the high bidder.
Usually well over 1/3 of all successful bids are reduced and over 75% of successful bidders have at least one of their winning bids reduced. We believe that the best strategy to being a successful bidder is placing your bids early and not waiting until the last minute. And because we reduce the high bid to no more than 10% over the 2nd high bid whenever possible we think it makes sense to send in your bid early with the confidence that your bid will be reduced if at all possible.
NO BUYER'S FEE (back to top)
There has been quite a bit of discussion lately about companies that charge what some say are excessive buyer's fees. We do not charge any buyer's fees in our sales. You are charged only for the amount of your winning bid plus postage and shipping charges. If you want the convenience of using your credit card we do charge you a small fee to help cover our costs.
LOT VIEWING SCHEDULE (back to top)
DENVER COIN EXPO. October 19th to November 1st. National Western Complex, "Expo Hall", I-70 and Brighton Blvd., Denver CO. Thursday October 29th is dealer set up day. Public hours are Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 3 PM. We will have most lots in the sale available for viewing at our bourse tables during all show hours. There are some bulky or heavy lots which we will bring only if specifically asked to. Please contact us prior to the show to ensure that we bring the lots you want to see.
We plan to have the majority of the material in the sale in our office Monday through Friday beginning October 19th except for the show dates mentioned above, until the close of the sale if you need more detailed description of any of the lots. However, please contact us as well in advance of the close of the sale as possible in order that we can provide you with as much information as we can. We will be happy to return your call if we cannot provide you with the information you require when you call, fax or email.
We will confirm all email bids received within 24 hours of receiving the bid. If you do not receive a confirmation please contact us. We have been deluged by spam as I'm sure many of you have also, thus we ask that when sending us a bid or inquiring about the sale, please put "Bid" or "Mailbid Sale" or "Auction" in the subject line so we do not delete your email along with the junk we receive every day. We do not confirm mail or fax bids unless specifically asked to do so. Please write clearly on your bid sheet. If possible in addition to the lot # and your maximum bid a small description is most helpful.
No information will be available about the results of the sale until all bids have been checked and invoices written. This should take about 4 days. We will not be answering the phone until that information is ready. We hope to be ready by Monday November 16th.
HIGHLIGHTS OF AUCTION 39E (back to top)
We usually have a gold coin section in our auctions but we have so few gold coins to offer the few gold coins are interspersed with the regular coins. The gold coins and medals are 185, 186, 323, 404, 652, 654 and 688.
The Ancient Jewish Coin section leads off with a long run of very nice and attractive tiny silver coins including Philisto-Arabian, Yehud and Samarian coins. Other highlights of this section include coins of both Herod Antipas and Herod Philip as well as a rare coin of Agrippa II issued under Claudius which depicts Antonia, Britannicus and Octavia, the children of Claudius, on the reverse. Also two Shekels of the First Revolt (Jewish War) as well as a number of scarce and rare Bar Kochba coins are available for bidding. As usual our city coin section is full of goodies including an unpublished Aelia Capitolina variant and better coins of many other cities.
The Greek section is smaller than usual but is not without some significant coins including two Athenian owls, a very high grade Shekel of Tyre and a rare portrait coin of the famous Cleopatra. Our Greek Imperial section lists only a handful of coins but there a number of significant Roman Egyptian rarities there including a AE20 Drachm of Augustus, an extremely rare Tetradrachm of Sabina (with her portrait but without the portrait of her husband Hadrian), an extremely rare Drachm of Antoninus Pius depicting the Harbor of Alexandria, a Tetradrachm of Julia Domna and a late Drachm of Philip I. Our Roman section is also smaller than usual but continues our offering of Roman women and there are three rare Jewish reference coins; a denarius of Vespasian with weeping Judaea below a palm tree (not a trophy), an even rarer Judaea Devicta denarius and the famous Fisci Ivdaici Sestertius of Nerva. The ancient coin offerings conclude with a few Byzantine coins and include a choice Gold Axumite coin of Ebana and a nice Arab-Byzantine coin of Jerusalem.
The World Coin Section is one of our best in many years. Among the highlights is a Maria Theresa Thaler from Burgau with the initials ST under the bust, two high grade half talers of Salzburg, a neat and unusual roller skating silver medal from Egypt, a nice 1/2 crown of William and Mary as well a few other high grade British coins. We have decided to keep intact a wonderful collection of Napoleon III Satirical coins which was put together over a number of years by a long time collector. 87 pieces and a self-published book on the Military headgear featured on these pieces certainly make Lot 252 one of a kind.
Throughout the world coin section are selections from a fantastic collection of medieval European coins by Jewish mintmasters or with a Jewish theme. Among the coins being offered are a couple of Juden Koph Pfennigs of Austria, a rare large bracteate of Nürnberg, perhaps the nicest run of Hungarian coins with Hebrew letters we have ever offered and without doubt the nicest and longest offering (7 coins) of medieval Polish coins with Hebrew words we've ever offered. We only have had a handful of these over the years, probably 5 to 7 in almost 40 years, this sale has 7 very nice coins. This is the largest sale of these in this country, and perhaps the world, in the past nine years!
Other better or unusual coins in this section, many from an old time collection put together in the 1950's and 1960's include a rare Teutonic Order Half Taler, a German 3 Mark Vogelwide Proof, a high grade 5 Mark 1934 Schiller commemorative, a very rare Hungary 1/2 Taler of Wladislaus II, quantity lots of Israel commemoratives and a rare 1964 Bank of Israel Gold Proof from an award winning collection. We are also offering a long run of Japanese 50 Sens, One Yens and Trade Dollars including a number of better dates. Other highlights of the world coin section include a very rare and high grade New Zealand "Strapless" Penny of 1956, high grade Palestine coins including a number of slabbed examples, orders and decorations from Peru, Russia and Thailand, two 19th century South African Pattern Pennies, an extremely rare South African WWII Internment Camp token which we've never seen before and a high grade 1877-S US trade dollar. The section concludes with a famous and classical crown of Zanzibar which is always in demand.
The World Paper Money section offers a long array of German Third Reich Konversionkasse bonds and certificates, certainly the most extensive listing of these, some in British Sterling, US Dollars, Dutch Gulden and Swiss Francs we've had or seen. Our listing of concentration camp paper money is indeed miniscule compared to huge collection of rarities offered in June but still there are notes from Buchenwald, Nordhausen and Oranienburg for sale as well as an envelope from Auschwitz. However the highlight of this section is a large run of Israel Paper Money Proofs and Trials most of which we have never seen. Included in this listing are hand-drawn sketches, metal plates and even some Proofs of non-accepted denominations. Also being offered are a number of lots containing notes with consecutive serial numbers in uncirculated which were probably put away 50+ years ago. And while we wish that someday soon we could offer 5, 10 or even 15 lots of Palestine Currency Board notes we will have to settle for 4 lots of these rare and desirable notes including a few in high grade.
Part Two is our Judaic and Holy Land related section and while smaller than usual does not lack for rare and interesting items. Among the highlights are 5 different Biblical related Jetons of Hans Krauwinkel, medals for Gabriel Riesser, Max Wilmersdoerffer, Rabbi Adolph Jellinek, Narcisse Levan, Meyer Cohan, Helene Goldschimdt, Sabato Morris, Ludwig Zamenhof, Max Nordau and numerous more modern but scarce silver sets from the 1970s. Also included is a plaque based on a painting by Maurycey Gottlieb and another of the Frankfurt Synagogue by Karl Goetz. There is also a rare Jewish charity token from Beirut in 1904. The section ends with a selection of State and Commissioned medals including a number of very rare ones, patterns and many modern ones that we've never seen before.
The paper section while not large has a number of scarce and unusual items including an exquisite, beautiful and large 1629 map of the Holy Land, an equally scarce 19th century set of four books of Picturesque Palestine, and a very nice selection of Eretz-Israel kollel notes, chits, bonds and shares. While many of the Holocaust related items are in other sections of the catalog some of the items that close the sale are a run of Jewish Winter Help Aid chits and receipts from Berlin in the mid-1930's, a couple of metal tags used in the early days of Dachau, a "J"passport, a rare postcard from Buchenwald, a Warsaw Ghetto Charity Coupon, a food card from a Croatian Concentration Camp and a children's food card from Litzmannstadt.

*252 ---napoleon iii. a collection of satrical and counter-marked coins of napoleon iii. a wonderful group of 87 coins, medals and tokens along with a self-published spiral bound book military headgear on the satirical coins of napoleon iii by richard dickerson which seems to be a reprint of a long article appearing in the numismatist in 1951. the metallic part of the collection consists mainly of different napoleon iii coins with hand engraved depictions of him as a devil, ogre, fool or all 3. many of these we have never seen before. included also are a number of advertising tokens on napoleon iii coins as well as a few small medals commemorating the franco-prussian war. a few of the coins seem to be regular issue pieces without anything added to them. most of the pieces are decent vf, some lower and a number of them ef or better. the franco-prussian war was an ill advised war perpetrated by emperor napoleon iii and his foreign minister de gramont (who bismarck called the stupidest man in europe). his troops were soundly and quickly defeated and these tokens soon appeared. i don't think it is still certain who produced these tokens, disgruntled french citizens, captured french soldiers with time on their hands or germans fostering a spirit of betrayal and defeatism in france. or perhaps it was a combination of all three. while we have offered individual pieces of these in the past few years that have sold for $50 or more, it is more difficult to estimate a value for the entire collection and our estimate is most likely very low. this collection would seem to be almost impossible to duplicate at this time and no doubt took the collector many years to assemble.we've only photographed 3 of the pieces but we can try to provide scans of the obverse of all the coins to interested parties. we can also provide an inventory list with a very short description of each item. for another lot of napoleon iii also see #373 $2000+?

We are actively seeking consignments for our Spring 2010 auction. Please contact us to discuss your consignment. The sale will take place in May or June depending upon our schedule. We'll decide sometime after this sale goes to press. We can always use better world and ancient numismatic material. We must ask that you contact us before shipping material because at times we get sent potential consignments that do not fit in our sales and it becomes a waste of time and money for both myself and the sender to return the material. However if you have a well formed and comprehensive collection we would be happy to sell it all. I hope to hear from you.

JUDAIC AND HOLY LAND PAPER (back to top)
At one time we divided this section into financial, graphic and historical but we have found that many of the items could easily fit in two or more categories, thus we have put all the paper items together more or less in chronological order.
For other paper items, please see Section one and the following lots: 459-465, 467-583. Also see the Holocaust section which is mostly paper and follows this.
*761 beautiful early map. 1629 "terra sancta quae in sacris terra promssionis olim palestina" by willem janzoon blaeu. an exquisite and beautiful copperplate engraving, colored by hand. this map by blaeu (spelled blaeuw on map) lays out the holy land as it would have been seen by moses from mt. pisgah at the end of his life. the decoration is inspired by the old testament. moses stands to the left of the cartouche, aaron to the right; in the mediterranean a giant sea monster waits to swallow jonah: and the course of the exodus twists through the sinai. this first appeared "in atlantis appendix", amsterdam 1630. see maps of the bible lands by kenneth nehenzahl pages 116-117, plate #42. this lovely map (printed plate area c. 15 x 19 1/2") was printed in amsterdam by blaeu, the founder of the greatest mapmaking firm of the 17th century. this is, by far, the rarest and most beautiful of all holy land maps we have offered and certainly our estimate is reasonable if not downright low. nice vf+, matted and ready to frame. $1500+
*762 picturesque palestine, sinai and egypt. 1881 edited by colonel wilson with numerous engravings on steel and wood from original drawings by harry fenn and j. d. woodward. in 4 books. each large size (c 13 x 10") green hardcover book contains 10 steel engravings and more than 140 wood engravings, thus a total of 40 steel engravings and more than 560 wood engravings. this is the finest book of this kind we can recall seeing and is in remarkably nice condition. since typical steel engravings like these would sell for $40 to $50 each, our conservative estimate would be a "steal". no pun intended. however we would certainly not like anyone to destroy these wonderful books. $1000+

*766 jewish colonial trust. 1900. share certificate, issued on 15 january 1900. issued to josef winter of somewhere in austria. with purple handstamp of czechsolvak republic at left, leaving us with the impression that mr. winter lived in what became czechoslovakia after wwi. for 10 shares. in each corner are vignettes of life in palestine at the turn of the century and the red embossed seal of the jewish colonial trust at left. one of the most beautiful of all eretz-israel certificates. tape repairs and tears without any coupons. i believe this is the earliest date that we have encountered for jct shares as the company was founded in 1899. similar to meshorer-34, but this is a share certificate. see lot below for a warrant. $100+

ANTI-SEMITISM AND THE HOLOCAUST (back to top)
Why do people collect this stuff? Obviously people collect for different reasons, but most people seem to collect these items as teaching tools for use at home, in schools, synagogues and churches. Many people donate them to national or local museums. There are people who deny the existence or magnitude of the Holocaust. These items are a weapon against them.

Jewish Winter Aid Under the Nazis. 1935-`1938. "Jüdisch Winterhilfe der Jüdischen Geminde zu Berlin" was the Jewish winter help of the Berlin community organized by the famed Rabbi Leo Baeck, later known as "The Teacher from Theresiendstadt. The Nurnberg Laws forbid Jews from receiving aid from the normal German WHW (Winter Aid Venture) and by late 1935 more than 20% of the Jews in Berlin were needy. Baeck began his campaign by saying, "No hungry member of our community can be allowed to be without food this Winter...No needy member without clothing...without shelter" in an appeal published during October 1935. The following 10 lots contain an unusual and rare offering of contribution receipts for donars or paper tokens for food. All have the logo of the "Jüdisch Winterhilfe der Jüdischen Geminde zu Berlin" in the center which is two hands clasped over a Magen David, all in a circle with the name of the organization around it.

*814 ---on beige paper. 1937. 20 reichspfennig dated 10 october 1937. this is for one pot of stew and has a quote in hebrew and german from proverbs 11:2, "happy is he that considers the poor". without a serial number but the number 1041 and a large 13 are at right. nice vf $80+

*822 dachau concentration camp. metal triangle. green with "h" in center and 803 above and various hallmarks on back. the metal identification tags (see the lot below) were used in the early days of the concentration camps before the nazis became more "efficient" in their methods and used cloth tags. the metal tags could easily be removed from clothing and made escape easier, and probably more importantly they could be placed at the end of a stick and be used as a weapon. the green triangle indicated that this prisoner #803 was a habitual criminal. see lot below for a companion piece. $300+?
*823 dacahu concentration camp. metal triangle. reddish brown with "h" in center and 8815 (over 3) above and various hallmarks on back. the red triangle indicated that this prisoner #2243 was a political prisoner. see lot above. $300+?
*824 from the nazi reich to bolivia. 1938-1939. group of 3 documents issued for gertrude fessler in her attempts to leave nazi germany. 1) her birth certificate showing that she was born to parents julius and olga (nee olga kuhn) on 11 july 1920 as recorded by the "jewish cultural center of vienna". on the back of this document we find a nazi certification, handstamp and adhesive and dated 16 december 1938 (just 5 weeks after kristallnacht). 2) an application for immigration to bolivia filed at the bolivian consulate by gertrude and dated 22 april 1939. this has two different "passport type" photographs of her, one prominently showing her left ear as the nazi racial ideology spouted that you could distinguish jews because of their left ear. also shows two fingerprints along with two references, one of herman schlesinger of vienna, the other from egon schlesinger of la paz who both recommended her. she also said that she had 36a3 in capital. 3) certificate of discharge by julius given to gertrude giving his permission for her to emigrate. also signed and hand-stamped by the nazis. thus gertrude was to travel alone to bolivia, while her parents had to remain in vienna, due to bad health, lack of funds or perhaps because only one immigration certificate was available. interesting group of 3 that again shows the degree of difficulty that jews faced in trying to leave the clutches of the nazis. basically f-vf $125+
*825 german-jewish refugee, 1st days in shanghai. 1939. reply part of a 15 reichspfennig, pre-paid nazi german postal card, sent from berta and paul, a german-jewish couple, who just fled from germany and had arrived in shanghai the day before. the card was mailed to mrs julia weiner in alzey, germany. "we arrived well on friday...went into this pension, but have already rented a room and will move there tomorrow...please use the address given here, that is general postal delivery.. hope you are all well...just met with other family members...love and kisses...". card endorsed "via siberia". the chinese postmark was on the 21st of august, the german receiving postmark was on the 13th of september after the outbreak of war! also see lots 838 and 838 for related items from shanghai. $75+
*826 "j" passport for jew who perished. in the past we've had similar type "j" or "jude" passports for people who were "lucky" enough to escape the nazis. in this case this passport was issued to someone who was transported to litzmannstadt and who perished before the end of the war. issued in vienna on 13 february 1940 to berta schneider with a red "j" on the first page. the photo, along with nazi handstamp, reveals her left ear very prominently. (nazi propaganda says that jews could be distinguished because their left ear was "different"). mrs. schneider was born in vienna on december, 8, 1885. obviously there are no visas inside and mr. schneider was not able to leave vienna until october 15th of 1941 when he was transported to litzmannstadt. accompanying this document is a print out from the "the central database of shoah victims' names" from yad vashem which confirms the details. in excellent condition due to the unfortunate fact that it was never used. remarkably this passport survived the war and for that reason alone must be extremely rare. in our sale 38d (lot 866) we sold a very similar passport issued to her husband isak. that sold for $1200 in intense bidding. $750
*827 postcard from buchenwald concentration camp 1940. a german printed formula postcard in red with camp regulations at left. the card is dated 18 august 1940 sent from israel hausmann, inmate #7236 of block #29 and sent to maline cizuoski of vienna. *829 poland, warsaw ghetto charity coupon. 20 groszy, 1941. issued by centos (or ztos) which was a social welfare organization for residents of the ghetto and funded by the american joint distribution committee. inscribed in polish & yiddish (hebrew letters) "centos quttung auf choesh fon kind 20 gr. 1941" (literally the month of the child). during this month a special exhibition of children's arts and crafts was held in the ghetto and funds were raised from the sale of these coupons. in green on white paper and hand-stamped at right. extremely rare, we can recall seeing only 2 of these before and that was in the mid-1990's when we sold a pair for $600. included with this lot is data in hebrew from yad vashem. $200+

*831 french refugee camp postcard. 1942. a postcard sent from moses schloss to leo weil in switzerland from the recebdou refugee and evacuee camp. the message in german reads, "many thanks for your nice parcel of food, i've received, marmalade, bread, halva, dried apricot & more bread. (the inmates would list the contents of what they receive to try to stop thefts by camp guards!). you are most kind to us...lea is back in the infirmary, may g-d help us..." this refugee camp was located in the suburbs of toulouse and created in the summer of 1940 for jewish refugees and evacuees. the "relative comfort" worsened quickly due to the lack of medical equipment, drugs and food. in late 1941 739 internees, more than half elderly, suffered from serious illness, during that winter over 100 of them died. later 349 jews were transported to drancy and then to auschwitz. the camp was liquidated in september of 1943. vf, with incomplete oval censor cancel at upper left. see simon page 69. rare. this is the first item i can recall from this camp. $150+?
